On February 16, 2024, the University of Exeter hosted an important event titled Harnessing the Power of AI – Meeting the Challenges and Opportunities, gathering thought leaders, policymakers, academics, and industry experts to explore the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence across the South West region. Among the distinguished speakers was Christopher Weavill, CEO of Cornwall-based AI technology company Hertzian, representing the cutting edge of practical AI innovation and regional impact.

The conference opened with remarks from Paul Coles, CEO of the South West Business Council, and Prof. Lisa Roberts, Vice Chancellor of Exeter University, setting the stage for a day dedicated to understanding AI’s role in society, business, and policy. A keynote address by Matt Rodda, Shadow Minister for AI and Intellectual Property, emphasized the critical need for thoughtful governance and innovation balance.

Chris Weavill’s participation was especially significant, bringing the perspective of a regional AI pioneer who has successfully leveraged machine learning and natural language processing to help businesses and public sector organisations extract valuable insights from unstructured data. At Hertzian, Chris leads efforts to ensure AI technologies deliver tangible benefits from improving community engagement to driving economic growth while maintaining a focus on ethical and responsible use.

The conference program explored pressing themes such as AI’s strategic importance for society, how AI and machine learning can boost productivity, and government’s role in creating frameworks that promote AI as a positive force. Practical applications were highlighted, including AI advancements in healthcare, weather forecasting, and environmental sustainability areas also addressed by leading experts like Prof. Kirstine Dale of the Met Office and Dr. John Downey from the University of Plymouth.

Chris’s insights complemented the discussions by showcasing how private sector innovation in Cornwall is addressing regional digital readiness and skills gaps, particularly through education partnerships and community-focused AI projects. His presence underscored the vital connection between academic research, policy, and commercial application in driving responsible AI adoption.

Other notable contributors to the conference included Prof. Simon McIntosh-Smith, leading the UK’s £250m Isambard-AI project, Richard Potter from Microsoft, and Lord Charlie Courtenay, who emphasized the intersection of technology and environmental concerns.

The event provided a platform not only to celebrate AI’s promise but also to critically assess challenges such as ethical risks and potential threats, aiming to shape a future where AI enriches lives and economies fairly and sustainably.

For Hertzian and Chris Weavill, this conference was a key opportunity to share Cornwall’s story of AI innovation on a national stage, reinforcing their commitment to building inclusive AI ecosystems that empower communities and businesses alike.
